Kofa Wildlife Refuge. The Kofa Wildlife Refuge is one of my favourite areas. Occupying about a thousand square miles in western Arizona, just north of Yuma, it has a varied landscape. For those that are curious, Kofa is an acronym for King of Arizona, an old mine. I've been here about half a dozen times, and with each trip I discover something new. I always take one of the 4WD roads, and find myself a scenic, secluded campsite. Usually I see nobody during my stay. | |
Organ Pipe National Monument. This park offers the quintessential desert experience. Located south of Phoenix, right at the Mexican border, it is amazingly lush for a desert. Spring is the best time to visit. Temperatures are reasonable, some of the cactus are in bloom, and wildflowers are definitely in bloom. |
